It can be seen from the ancient stone walls scorched by the sun of a medieval village perched above the sea.

Most people imagine the Côte d’Azur as a succession of glamorous seaside resorts. Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez certainly deserve their reputation. The blue water is beautiful, the marinas sparkle and the cafes don’t close from morning until late at night…

But the real heart of the region is well above the coast.

Spreading across the hills, dozens of medieval villages have stood for hundreds of years. The French call them “perched villages,” because they were built high on rocky hills to protect themselves. Today, they offer some of the most beautiful views in the region, as well as narrow stone alleys, historic churches, local restaurants, and a much quieter pace of life than the bustling coast.

If you are planning a trip, this tourist guide to the Côte d’Azur presents seven escapades in the hills that will allow you to discover another facet of southern France. These are among the best places to visit on the Côte d’Azur if you are looking for history, landscapes, and moments of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the coast.

1. Èze: the Eagle’s Nest

Situated at approximately 430 meters (1,400 feet) above the Mediterranean Sea, the village of Èze is one of the most famous perched villages on the Côte d’Azur. Its elevated position offers visitors breathtaking views of the coastline, earning it the nickname of “Eagle’s Nest”.

The village is small enough to be explored on foot. Most of the streets are narrow and paved with stones. You will pass under old arcades, and you will pass by small artisan shops and discover quiet squares adorned with flowers.

One of the main attractions is the Exotic Garden, built on the ruins of an old castle. Others seem to be works of art in themselves.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence combines both of these aspects. This magnificent village is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in southern France. The cobbled streets, the stone houses, and the medieval walls have changed very little over the centuries.

Don't miss taking a stroll along the ancient walls. They offer magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, including the vineyards, olive groves and hills in the distance.

If you love art, history, and architecture, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most enriching medieval cities to visit in the south of France.

3. Sainte-Agnès: the highest seaside resort in Europe

Above Menton is a village about which many travelers have never heard of.

Sainte-Agnès, in France, is located at an altitude of about 800 meters. Often considered the highest coastal village in Europe, it is officially among the most beautiful villages in France.

Despite its exceptional location, the village remains quiet for most of the year. Visitors can explore its underground tunnels and discover a significant part of French military history.

If you are looking for breathtaking views of the coast without the crowds, Sainte-Agnès is definitely worth a visit.

4. Peillon: a preserved temporal capsule

If you are looking for silence, come here.

Peillon seems to be spared by modern tourism. You won’t find rows of souvenir shops or crowded restaurant terraces there. Instead, you’ll discover narrow alleys, stone houses that have aged with time, and quiet corners where only the birds come to break the silence.

The village was built on a mountain side, so that many of the houses seem to emerge from the rock itself. Narrow staircases connect the streets, as cars cannot access most of the village.

Peillon is one of the best-hidden gems in the south of France for anyone who loves quiet places and photography. Here are some tips to keep in mind before your visit to the Côte d’Azur.

01. Visit them in May or September

The end of spring and the beginning of autumn are the best times to explore these villages. It’s warm enough to walk around, and the streets are much quieter than in the summer.

That doesn’t mean you won’t have a great time if you come in the summer. Indeed, summer can be a wonderful time to discover these villages if you enjoy long sunny days, lively terraces, and the opportunity to combine a visit to the perched villages with moments on the coast. Just be prepared for higher temperatures and a bit more crowds, especially in the most famous villages.

02. Moving around

The easiest way to visit several villages is to rent a small car. This gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and stop whenever you see a beautiful view.

If you prefer not to drive, local buses from Nice connect many of these villages. This is a good option if you are traveling on a limited budget or if you plan to take day trips around the Côte d’Azur.

If you need help planning your itinerary, KP Tourist Guide offers personalized assistance to visitors in France. We can take care of organizing your trip, suggest the best routes between the villages, and help you get around. This way, you can fully enjoy these exceptional destinations perched on the hills without the stress of organizing every detail.

03. Wear comfortable shoes

Do not underestimate the importance of wearing comfortable walking shoes.

Most villages have steep cobbled streets, rugged paths and many stairs. A good pair of shoes will make your exploration much more enjoyable.

Also bring a reusable water bottle, especially if you are visiting the region during the warmer months. Many villages involve steep climbs, and you will appreciate having water at hand.

Another side of the French Riviera

The Côte d’Azur will always be famous for its luxury yachts, glamorous beaches and elegant seaside resorts.

But the perched villages tell a different story. They allow you to discover the history of the region, the local culture, and a more peaceful way of life. Each village has its own personality. Some are renowned for their art. Others for their gastronomy, history, or their incredible views. Together, they show why the Côte d’Azur is much more than just a seaside destination.

If you are planning your first trip to the south of France, don’t spend all your time on the coast. Add a few of these villages on the Côte d’Azur to your itinerary. You might discover that they will become the highlight of your trip.

If you want to discover the Côte d’Azur in a fluid, personalized and truly unforgettable way, book a discovery interview today KP Tourist Guide,We will show you exactly how we can create a customized experience for visiting the Côte d’Azur. It refers to the Mediterranean coastline in the southeast of France, which extends from the Cassis region to the Italian border. The region is known for its cities such as Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Tropez, as well as for its beautiful hilltop villages.

2. How many days does it take to discover the Côte d’Azur?

A stay of five to seven days will give you enough time to enjoy both the coast and the perched villages. You can spend a few days exploring cities like Nice and Cannes, then dedicate two or three days to day trips on the Côte d’Azur to places like Èze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Gourdon, and Sainte-Agnès.

3. What is the most beautiful village on the Côte d’Azur?

There is no single answer, because each village offers something different. Èze is famous for its breathtaking views of the sea, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is known for its art galleries and medieval streets, Mougins is appreciated for its restaurants, while Sainte-Agnès offers incredible coastal landscapes with fewer crowds. The best choice depends on your interests: history, photography, gastronomy, or panoramic views.

The most beautiful view of the Côte d’Azur can’t be enjoyed from a private beach club in Saint-Tropez. It can only be admired from the ancient stone walls of a medieval village perched above the sea. Most people imagine the Côte d’Azur as a succession of glamorous seaside resorts. Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez deserve their reputation. The blue water is magnificent, the marinas sparkle and the cafés don’t close until late morning or late at night… But the true heart of the region lies well above the coastline. Scattered across the hills, dozens of medieval villages have stood for hundreds of years. The French call them “perched villages,” because they were built high on rocky hills to protect themselves. Today, they offer some of the most beautiful views of the region, as well as narrow stone-paved streets, historic churches, local restaurants, and a much quieter pace of life than the bustling coast. If you’re planning a trip, this tourist guide to the Côte d’Azur presents seven escapades in the hills that will let you discover another facet of southern France. These are among the best places to visit on the Côte d’Azur if you’re looking for history, scenery, and moments of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. 1. Èze: the perched village of Éze Situated at about 430 meters (1,400 feet) above the Mediterranean Sea, the village of Èze is one of the most famous perched villages on the Côte d’Azur. Its elevated position offers visitors breathtaking views of the coastline, earning it the nickname of “the perched village.” The village is small enough to be explored on foot. Most of the streets are narrow and paved with stones. You will pass under old arcades, and you will walk along small artisan shops and discover quiet squares adorned with flowers. One of the main attractions is the Exotic Garden, built on the ruins of an old castle. From there, you can enjoy one of the most panoramic views of the Côte d’Azur. On a clear day, the sea stretches out into the distance. Èze is an excellent choice if you love photography, history, or simply want to discover one of the most beautiful views in the region. Visit it early in the morning or late in the afternoon if you prefer a quieter setting. 2. Saint-Paul-de-Vence: the sanctuary of artists Some villages inspire artists. Others seem to be works of art themselves. Saint-Paul-de-Vence combines both aspects. This magnificent village is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in southern France. It has attracted artists for decades thanks to its peaceful atmosphere, magnificent landscapes, and carefully maintained buildings. Marc Chagall lived here in the last years of his life, and his influence is still noticeable throughout the village. Today, you can find art galleries, workshops, sculptures, and exhibitions almost on every street corner. Walking around the village is an integral part of the experience. The cobbled streets, stone houses, and medieval walls have changed very little over the centuries. Don’t miss taking a walk along the old walls. They offer magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, including vineyards, olive groves, and distant hills. If you love art, history, and architecture, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most enriching medieval cities to visit in the south of France. 3. Saint-Agnès: The highest seaside resort in Europe Above Menton is a village that many travelers have never heard of. Saint-Agnès, in France, is located at an altitude of about 800 meters. Often considered the highest coastal village in Europe, it is officially among the most beautiful villages in France. Despite its exceptional location, the village remains quiet for most of the year. Narrow alleys wind between stone houses adorned with flowers, while small lookout towers overlook the Mediterranean Sea. One of the highlights is the Fort de la Ligne Maginot, built before the Second World War. Visitors can explore its underground tunnels and discover a significant part of French military history. If you are looking for breathtaking views of the coast without the crowds, Saint-Agnès is definitely worth a visit. 4. Peillon: a preserved time capsule If you seek silence, come here. Peillon seems untouched by modern tourism. You won’t find rows of souvenir shops or crowded restaurant terraces. Instead, you’ll discover narrow alleys, stone houses that have aged with time, and quiet corners where only the birds break the silence. The village was built on a mountain side, so many of the houses seem to emerge from the rock itself. Narrow staircases connect the streets, as cars cannot access most of the village. Peillon is one of the best-hidden gems in the south of France for anyone who loves quiet places and photography. Every corner offers an interesting subject to immortalize, from old wooden doors to stone walls covered in ivy. Plan to spend a few hours wandering without a specific itinerary. This is the best way to appreciate this peaceful village. 5. Gourdon: The balcony of the Côte d’Azur Gourdon towers spectacularly on top of a rocky hill overlooking the Loup valley. The drive to the village is almost as memorable as the destination itself. The road climbs through the mountains before opening out onto vast panoramas of valleys, forests and the Mediterranean Sea. The village has retained much of its medieval character. Its stone buildings, narrow alleys and small public squares give it an timeless atmosphere. There are also several restaurants and cafés where you can

[12,8
23,25,27,18,24,19,26,28
post-3219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destination-ideas","category-main-attractions-in-france","tag-cote-dazur","tag-france","tag-france-tour-agency","tag-france-tour-guide","tag-french-riviera","tag-kp-tourist-guide","tag-tour-guide-in-france","tag-visit-cote-dazur

À la découverte de la Côte d’Azur : 7 joyaux cachés de la Riviera française - KP TOURIST GUIDE

<meta name="description" content="La Côte d’Azur, également appelée Riviera française, regorge de magnifiques villages médiévaux.
